what we do

biosynthesis and innovation

the biosynthesis

We design biotechnological solutions to improve the recycling of complex materials, such as laminated packaging that combines paper, plastic and other treatments.

In the world of biotechnology, the term biosynthesis represents one of the most fascinating processes.
Biosynthesis is a natural process, driven by microorganisms, which allows the creation of complex molecules starting from simpler compounds, using the energy of biological chemistry.
It is the driving force of many natural processes, but also the key to developing innovative and sustainable solutions.

Leonora,
our first patent

LEONORA, our flagship product, uses biocompounds obtained through biosynthesis to effectively separate cellulose fibers from plastics, making the latter more recyclable. This approach reduces waste and allows the reuse of precious resources in production cycles.

We are exploiting the biosynthesis potential to tackle one of the great challenges of recycling: coupled materials. Imagine complex packaging such as beverage cartons, coffee glasses, dry pasta packages, biscuits or food packaging, made up of layers of paper, plastic and other surface treatments. These materials, increasingly present on the market, are very useful in daily life and necessary to better address the ecological transition of the food and beverage packaging sector. However, they represent a commitment and challenge for recycling.

paper mills

Paper mills find themselves dealing with plastic waste contaminated by cellulose, which often has no applications in the world of plastics. This contamination compromises the densification and subsequent extrusion processes, limiting the possibilities of recovery.

biocompounds

Thanks to specific biocompounds produced through biosynthetic processes, we can effectively separate these layers, preserving the cellulose fibers and modifying the plastics to make them more recyclable. This approach not only reduces waste, but allows us to recover precious resources, ready to be reintroduced into production cycles.

partnerships

Thanks to the partnership with Kadant – Upcycling, a global leader in fiber and waste management technologies, and with Lucart S.p.A., Italian multinational paper manufacturing company, we are optimizing processes to integrate LEONORA biotechnology with machinery already in use in paper mills, improving efficiency and recovery of difficult materials.
